don't know what is going on....

Let me start by saying that over the last month I've been playing close attention to JD's water/fluid intake. All he wants is to be drinking. He is literally thirsty ALL OF THE TIME! If he is fussy, it's because he wants water. If he is having a tantrum, all he wants is water. I have to have a water bottle with me everywhere we go. He prefers water over milk, juice, anything. At first, I just thought it was because it was summer and he was hot. However after my own concerns were also acknowledged by my mom and her noticing something being a little strange about his excessive thirst, I was pondering whether or not I am just being a paranoid mom or whether there is something going on. Then after reading my friend's blog about how much her child weighs I thought maybe I should go and weigh JD. (because he feels so light). So I did. KNowing that our scale at home probably differs from the one at the DR .'s office I weighed Blake first because I knew exactly what he weighs. Our scale was 1 pound less than his weight. So then I weighed JD. He weighed a whopping 20 pounds. Yep you read that right. He weighed 20 pounds over 4 months ago at his 1 year check up. I immediately called the office to schedule a well baby visit. JD is the best eater of all three of our kids. He is eating all the time and he eats a lot of healthy things. This morning was his appointment. The DR. is also concerned about his height and weight. All of his percentages have decreased (some of them dramatically). His head circumference is exactly the same as over 4 months ago. He has gained less than 1/2 a pound IN OVER 4 MONTHS!! So basically he is not growing. The DR. said that it could be just a matter of him needing more calories. The kid eats like a champ. If he didn't then I would say maybe that is the problem. But my gut tells me that it isn't a matter of calories. So here are our 2 options
1. have lots of blood work done on him as well as a catheter to check for diabetes and other things. Which he said would be VERY unpleasant for me and him
2. wait 2 months until his 18 month check-up, try increasing calories especially those he drinks, track his weight and see if he is doing any better, and possibly still do all the lab work if numbers aren't significantly improving.
What would you guys do? I feel something isn't right. Like I said before, if he was a bad eater or didn't eat much at all, I would think just increasing the calories would be the route to go. I am a little worried. The DR also observed him and said that developmentally he looks great. Anyone else's child(ren) stop gaining weight this young or at this little of a weight? Anyways, keep little Jaxton in your prayers. Hopefully it is nothing and he just needs some more meat on those bones. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated.

That is a tough one Heather. My first instinct is to tell you to wait it out as to avoid any discomfort but then part of me is thinking DONT WAIT. It's too scary to think what might happen if you wait. The discomfort is worth it if you catch something serious and avoid other issues by finding out what is going on. I would say DONT WAIT. That's my advice.
He is definately in our prayers.
LOVE YOU!

I would say don't wait. I would do both options. I know having JD's blood drawn will be a scary thing for both of you, but well worth ruling out anything serious. We had to have Cooper's blood drawn for his peanut allergy, the lab tech was awesome and they get it done quickly.

We had a few health scares with the boys. There was something "just not quite right" and every time we made sure we knew what was going on even if it involved unpleasant things such as having blood drawn or MRIs. THere's always that "what if" and I would regret it the rest of my life if I didn't follow through on an instinct even though 95% of the time everything is fine. Good luck! And if it makes you feel better Ryen has gain 5 lbs. in the last three years!!
